Natural and Produced Probiotics

Renew Life 200 Billion/10 strain Probiotics

Did you know the cells in your gut outnumber all the cells that make up your entire body?

In 2014, it was estimated that for the average man between 20 and 30 years old, weighing 70 kg or 154 pounds at a height of 170 cm or  5′ 7″, known as the ‘reference man’ – there would be about 39 trillion bacterial cells living among 30 trillion human cells that make up our bodies, 84% of which are red blood cells.  The new estimate is closer to 1:1 accounting for defecation of bacteria in our waste which leaves a continual flux.

While the best of the best Probiotics found on the market have an average of only around 120 billion CFUs (Colony Fighting Units), it may seem like a drop in the ocean when it comes to replacing the beneficial bacteria in our gut on a daily basis.  But without that replacement, the bad can outweigh the good which leads to an imbalance that can overwhelm our immune system.  So it is vital for us to do all we can daily to maintain the proper ratio.

We need to ingest as many strains and cultures as we possibly can every day if we expect our immune system to keep up the tedious work of maintaining and prevent the compromising of our health.

There are many different types of cultures as well as strains, from acids to organisms and from both foods as well as carefully designed formulations to assure our optimal health.  But without them, we are subject to invasion of other organisms, parasites, infection, and total compromise of our immune systems and overall health.

People have understood this need since long before science pointed it out in the last hundred years or so.  Various social cultures from the world have looked to fermented foods over the millennia that have included fermented fruits and vegetables to concocted formulations and to the more recent discovery of Probiotics from human-produced bacteria, as well as soil-based organisms which have been isolated and grown in labs to provide the most potent products to build and protect the human microbiome.  And this is the primary focus of this article.

Many are aware of foods such as Sauerkraut which has been popular among many cultures and countries as well as variations such as Kimchi (also known as Kimchee) which is fermented Nappa or Chinese Cabbage with dried hot chili peppers added.  For many centuries, people around the world have fermented cucumbers in crocks, making pickles as well as other vegetables.  Bread grains have been fermented making sourdough bread.  Vegetables have been put in salt-water solutions to make Kvass.  Dairy has been left to ferment with cultures from various sources to make Kefir and Yogurt.  Even broth, such as bone broth has been found to have more benefits when allowed to ferment.  Organisms in the soil have also been discovered as many have lived eating dirt which has found its way into food through time. Wine and beer have become popular over time as these too are fermented.  Kombucha which was first discovered in Asia became very popular in Russia and Eastern Europe and is now one of the most popular fermented beverages.  And of course, vinegar which has been made from fermenting a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains has been around since humans first discovered it ages ago.  And more recently, as organisms have been found in the human gut and been isolated, Probiotic formulations have become quite popular in recent decades and now are extremely common in most health regimens

It is said that a one-quarter cup of Sauerkraut has as many cultures as one average bottle of Probiotics.  Sauerkraut can vary depending on how it’s made.  [While most has been made with salt since it’s discovery thousands of years ago, some is and has been made with whey.] The primary focus here will be on a few of the tens of thousands of commercial Probiotics available today in most stores, health foods stores and on the internet.

What is important to remember with these Probiotics is that the more strains, the more effective they will be.  While levels of Colony-Fighting-Units (CFUs) can be important, it is the variety of strains that will do the most good.  In fact, some medical conditions have been found to respond to healing best from certain specific strains.  If you’re dealing with a certain condition, you may want to learn if there is a specific strain of culture(s) that can best address your condition.

While I have found one brand, (Progurt) that has the most CFUs, it has very few strains.  The levels are as follows:
Ingredients per Probiotic Sachet
1 Trillion Colony Forming Units (CFU) Beneficial Bacteria Capability.
Human Probiotic Isolates™ (HPI) of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and Bifidobacteria (including Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Bifidus and Streptococcus Thermophilus), Inactivated Yeast Extract, Cellulose.

Progurt – Probiotics

As you can see, although it has a whopping 1 Trillion CFUs, it has only 5 strains. So while powerful in the way of the number of cultures, it is not so strong in the number and variety of strains of those cultures.  It is also quite expensive @ $30 US dollars for only two sachets.  You can find this listed below under the sources.

Something important with all Probiotics and fermented foods one should keep in mind is to start small.  If the gut is not used to fermented cultures and especially if there is an over-abundance of bad bacteria, there can be an explosive reaction as toxins are released and flushed out.  Many times, this can result in the same feeling experienced when first acquiring the toxins and can range from cold and flu-type symptoms to diarrhea and more.

For this reason, I normally recommend one of two Probiotics, to begin with.  HMF Replete or HMF Forte by Genestra from Seroyal.  These are both relatively low in both strains and CFUs and can be good Probiotics to start with.  While the Replete comes in sachets, with one sachet being one dose, you may find it expensive to continue at that rate.

HMF Replete

This comes in 20 g sachets. The suggested dose is 1 sachet per day (1/2 twice daily) Each sachet provides 150 Billion CFUs and contains 5 strains.  It also contains Apricot powder as a Prebiotic. Non-Medicinal Ingredients: Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), apricot powder SACHET (20 g) CONTENT: Probiotic Consortium/ Consortium probiotique ………………….150 billion CFU/ milliards d’UFCLactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60)Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-21)Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20)Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-34)Lactobacillus salivarius (CUL-61)

When beginning HMF Replete, as these come in sachets, I recommend the first day to take 1/2 once or twice daily. But then to decrease to 1 tsp. for a few days then drop to 1/2 tsp. either twice a day or even just once a day. The Forte can be taken as is @ 1 capsule a day. Once a person is used to taking Probiotics, then I suggest one of (or better yet, rotating between these as I do) the following below including a Soil Based Probiotic (SBO). I find it beneficial to rotate between many of these and I’m always looking for new ones that are even better. The greater number of strains, the more conditions are covered.

Recent studies have shown some conditions are addressed best by specific strains, however, they have yet to discover one for all conditions that are effective though they will likely come. For now, the more variety the better – once one is used to taking them. But naturally fermented foods should still be consumed daily. I eat four to five different fermented foods each day plus I take a daily Probiotic. The gut cannot get too many positive cultures. But again, care should be taken at first or you will cause a toxic storm if you introduce too much too fast. So start small.

I do not find commercial yogurt or kefir to be good sources. These are pasteurized, contain sugar, and have very few strains and most will cause more harm than they will do good.
